Talk Description

Digital forensics is based on the simple assumption that data does not lie. Whether it is civil or criminal in nature nowadays investigations face an ever-increasing amount of digital evidence that must be efficiently and effectively collected, preserved, and analysed to uncover the truth.

We will discuss what is and isn’t possible in terms of data recovery and forensic analysis, drawing on real life case studies we will examine how digital forensics has assisted in the successful prosecution in relation to number of significant counter terrorism investigations.

About Stuart Hutchinson

After joining the Metropolitan Police in 1992, I joined the Special Branch in 1998. Initially as a Special Branch Close Protection Officer and team leader I was personally responsible for the physical security of current and former Prime Ministers, high-level cabinet members, foreign heads of state, and other dignitaries visiting the United Kingdom. In addition to extensive deployments throughout the UK, I was deployed operationally in Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa, Malaysia and Vietnam.

In 2002 I started the Special Branch High Tech Unit, responsible for the acquisition, analysis and investigation of digital evidence and intelligence relating to International Counter Terrorism, Counter Espionage and Official Secret Act investigations. Undertaking covert and overt operations across networks to acquire high-grade intelligence to support ongoing investigations and providing technical support and assistance to Special Branch operational teams.

I am currently contracted to BlackBag Technologies as a Forensic Analyst & Instructor, providing technical support, forensic analysis and training to clients in the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. BlackBag Technologies, Inc. provides Mac OS X, iPhone, and iPad forensics and eDiscovery solutions. BlackBag acknowledges the growing challenges faced by forensic examiners and legal professionals in the digital forensics field, and is dedicated to creating flexible, multi-platform-compatible software, and comprehensive training solutions. BlackBag serves a wide range of clients, including federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, as well as leading private sector security, legal, and personnel professionals.
